Maggie Valley, NC Area Info
The Valley was named after Maggie Mea Setzer Pylant on May 10, 1904. Since it was her father John Sidney Setzer who wrote the United States postal service asking for permission to build a post office in their area. At the time they were not even a town so they had no town name.
Mr. Setzer was told they would have to be an established town before they could set up a post office. They informed him to submit three names and they would pick one, her father submitted his three daughters names. They sent him back their choice, Maggie so the town became Maggie Valley.
Ms. Setzer died in 1979 at age 88 but to honor her the town of Maggie
Valley has two women who take turns walking around in the period costume
of Maggie Setzer. A yellow prairie bonnet, red ankle length skirt, green
blouse and yellow apron. They stroll the streets of Maggie chatting
to visitors and waving to passing cars so keep your eyes open when your
